We know girls love Beyonce, but do men hate braids?

6 Aug

Hi Beauties!

First off please excuse the title of my post, I am  obsessed with that damn Drake song!  Anyway, a few weeks ago a really good guy friend and I were talking and the subject of hair came up, specifically braids. I was telling him how I was going to keep my hair braided for the summer and much to my surprise he told me and I quote,  “Men don’t like braids, they tolerate them but they don’t like them. Only women like braids.” He told me if I was to put my hair back into braids he would start a campaign to, “Free Lola” printed t-shirts and all. I simply laughed it off as the banter of a man who wears sunglasses at night in the darkness of  nightclubs (inside joke) but the following week a male co-worker also said something along those same lines and I couldn’t help but start to wonder, “Do men really hate braids?” Now I know not everything is for everyone and perhaps I should just chalk it up to that but still I kind of wonder if any of you ladies have heard anything like this too? I always thought braids were sexy, hell didn’t LL, “want a girl with extension in her hair”  Let me know what you think!

Did I Mention I Got Yarn Braids?

9 Nov

If you  follow me on Instagram (chichappenz) you probably have already seen these pictures but if you don’t here are a couple of pictures of my new yarn braids/genie locs. At first I wasn’t too crazy about them but they are growing on me. I purchased the yarn from my local Walmart it is the  Red Heart brand in the super saver size.  A friend braided my hair so I can’t offer a tutorial but I know there are a ton of tutorials on YouTube under yarn braids or genie locs. I will care for my yarn braids using the same products and methods that I used on my box braids. From what I have read yarn braids/genie locs are really good at keeping your hair well moisturized. I am planning to keep them in for 6 weeks but knowing me it will be more like 4 weeks.

Are you wearing protective styles this winter?

I Got Box Braids!

20 Sep

Guys, it’s happened or it’s happening either way it’s going down…  Lola has been driving me mad lately. My cute, easy twa, isn’t so cute or so easy and is definitely no longer a twa. I have hit an awkward phase. As I said in a previous post Lola is around 3.5 -4 inches and at this length my coil outs aren’t as easy. My coil outs aren’t quite as fab as they used to be and my twist out attempts have been complete DISASTERS! So bad that my mother handed me a copy of Essence with the page folded to an article on natural hairstyles for “inspiration” aka code for letting me know what I’m doing really ain’t it.  So I got box braids!

By now we all know that box braids are back with a vengeance. They’ve been spotted on many of our favorite celebs from our super fly sister in natural hair Solange and sister King B to one of the original box braided celebs MO-to the E-to the aka Brandy.

I’d  planned to wear some kind of protective style during the winter but Lola’s awkward stage has moved things a head of schedule. I am hoping to keep the box braids for about 2 months  then do genie locs and perhaps even a weave. This plan is of course dependent  on the condition of my hair.  I am going to do a separate  post on how I intend to care for my  braids tomorrow but for now I am off to Google hairstyles for box braids and listen to Patra.
