NY Times: The Afro as a Natural Expression of Self

4 Oct

The New York Times online edition has an interesting article  about afros i.e. natural hair as an extension of self-expression and or politics. The article is titled, “The Afro as a Natural Expression of Self” . In college  had a professor who always said. “The personal is political.” And while her statement was more so directed towards the creation of social movements perhaps it has also validity in our current natural hair trend (I don’t really think natural hair is a trend but for a lack of a better word we use it). While I do consider wearing my hair in its natural state an expression of who I am, I am not sure whether I find it to be a political statement. I don’t really feel that by wearing my hair natural I am  liberating myself from some conformist European beauty standard.  I just like my hair in its natural state.

What do you think of the article?

Are you over this whole natural hair debate?

Final Thoughts: I purchased a sample of this product along with a sample of the Test Whip (review here). So you guys already know that I had nothing but great things to say about the Test Whip and the CurlyCue Renew is another great product! The consistency of the product is creamy but not too thick. The smell is so yummy! It smells just like cake mix. I applied the product and sat under the hair dryer for 45 minutes. When I rinsed the product out I was left with super soft, incredibly moisturized hair. My hair felt so good that I was annoyed I hadn’t purchased the full size.

Don’t Believe the Hype? Believe It!

Final Thoughts:  First off can I just say how much I love that this company offers its products in  a variety of sizes at different prices. I bought the 2oz. sample size  and after using the product was really disappointed that I hadn’t bought a larger sized container. I really, really like this product. The consistency is light and it boasts 97% natural ingredients. I used it over Curl Junkies Smoothing Lotion for a twist out on Lola (the twist out I’m rocking in the Natural Hair and Neons post).*  My hair had great definition. I loved that it  was soft and moisturized and not greasy or weighed down. The product is only available online and it did take  a few weeks to receive my order after I had placed it.  I think the longer shipping time may have been mostly due to the product being new and in high demand, either way it was definitely worth the wait. I am definitely going to purchase a larger size of the product very soon.

*Since I had only purchased the 2oz. sample size I wasn’t able to twist my all of my hair with the product. I used Elasta QP Mango Butter when I ran out. While both products gave me good definition, I felt the test whip let my hair a bit softer and more mositurized.
